Stickers and vinyl decals are cheap to make, quick to ship and easy to sell in quantity. They are also the items where Etsy’s fixed fees and your packing time take the biggest share of each sale, because the price is low. A sticker that looks profitable on a material cost basis can leave very little once a few cents of fees, an envelope and five minutes of your time come out of it.

This guide shows how to work out a real cost per sticker or decal, why small orders need a different eye on fees, and how to check a price you already charge with the pricing calculator.

The figures below are example numbers, not market prices. To keep every number checkable, the worked example reuses the inputs of worked example C from the calculator tests. Use your own costs and timings.

What to count in a sticker or decal

  • Sticker paper or vinyl. The cost of one sheet divided by the number of stickers you cut from it.
  • Laminate or overlay, if you use one, counted per sheet the same way.
  • Ink. Your ink cost per printed sheet, shared across the stickers on that sheet.
  • Transfer tape for vinyl decals, measured by the area you use.
  • Packaging. Backing card, a clear sleeve, a rigid mailer or envelope, a thank-you card.
  • Your time per order. Printing, cutting, weeding decals, sorting, packing and printing the label.
  • Overhead. A share of cutting machine blades and mats, printer wear and design software.
  • Misprints and miscuts. Sheets that come out off-register or cut badly, spread across the good stickers.

Cost per sticker from a sheet

Most sticker costs come in sheets, packs and rolls, so work out a cost per sticker once and reuse it:

  1. Add up the cost of one sheet: the paper or vinyl, any laminate and the ink for one print.
  2. Divide by the number of stickers you get from that sheet when you lay it out the way you normally do.
  3. That is your material cost per sticker. Multiply it by the number of stickers in an order or a pack.

For cut vinyl decals, use the method from our guide to pricing Cricut vinyl shirts: the roll price divided by its square inches, times the square inches the decal uses, plus a little for weeding waste. Add transfer tape the same way.

Why fixed fees matter more on small orders

Etsy charges 9.5% of the item price plus shipping, plus a fixed $0.45 per order. On a large order the fixed part hardly shows. On a small one it is a real share:

  • On the $29.67 mug order in our sublimation mug guide, the $0.45 is 1.5% of what the buyer pays.
  • On a $6.00 sticker order (a $5.00 item price plus $1.00 shipping), the same $0.45 is 7.5% of what the buyer pays, and all of Etsy’s fees together come to $1.02, or 17.0%.

That is why selling in packs and sets usually makes more sense for stickers than selling single small items: the per-order fee, the envelope and your packing minutes are shared across more stickers.

A worked example: a small sticker order

This example reuses the numbers of worked example C as one small sticker order on Etsy:

  • Materials: $0.80 for the stickers and packaging in the order.
  • Labor: 5 minutes at $18 an hour: 5 / 60 x $18 = $1.50.
  • Overhead: $0.20.
  • Cost per item: $0.80 + $1.50 + $0.20 = $2.50.
  • Shipping: the buyer pays $1.00, and the postage costs you $0.73.
  • Current price: $5.00.

Enter those numbers and $5.00 in Check my current price:

At your current price of $5.00
Fees$1.02
Profit$1.75
Margin29.2%
Earnings per hour$39.00
Worked example C used as a small sticker order on Etsy, priced at $5.00.

The fees are 9.5% of $6.00 plus $0.45, which is $1.02. The profit is $5.00 + $1.00 – $0.73 – $2.50 – $1.02 = $1.75, and the margin is $1.75 / $6.00 = 29.2%.

With the calculator’s starting margin of 30%, the suggested price is $5.09 and the charm price is $5.99. At $5.99 the fees are $1.11, the profit is $2.65, the margin is 37.9% and the order earns $49.75 an hour. On a low-priced item, the jump from $5.00 to the next .99 price is a large change in profit: here, $0.90 more per order.

Packs, sets and quantity

Because the fixed fee, the envelope and much of your packing time are per order, a pack of stickers usually costs you less per sticker than a single one. Price packs by running the calculator for the whole pack: materials for every sticker in it, your minutes to cut and pack that pack, and one set of packaging and shipping.

If you offer quantity options, such as single designs and themed sets, run each option through the calculator. Do not just multiply the single price, or you will overcharge for sets and leave the single-sticker price too thin.

Shipping stickers

Flat stickers may be able to go in a plain envelope, which keeps postage low; check your postal service’s rules for what can be sent that way. Enter what you charge for shipping and what the postage really costs. Remember that Etsy’s percentage fees apply to the shipping you charge too. If you offer free shipping, enter $0 for shipping charged and your real postage cost; the calculator moves the cost into the item price.

If you upgrade to tracked shipping or a rigid mailer, that changes your shipping cost, and on an order this small it can change your price noticeably. Run the numbers before you switch.

Decals

Vinyl decals take more of your time than printed stickers: weeding, applying transfer tape and trimming. Time a batch of each decal design, divide by the number of decals, and put that in labor minutes. Large or detailed decals take longer than simple ones, and their prices should show it.

Selling to shops

If a shop wants to stock your stickers, wholesale changes the fees and shipping, not your cost. See wholesale vs retail pricing for handmade goods for how to set a wholesale price from your cost and agree terms with a shop.

Questions sellers ask

Should I price per sticker or per pack?

Price per order. The fees, envelope and packing time are per order, so a pack or a minimum order spreads them across more stickers. Run each pack size through the calculator.

Should holographic or specialty stickers cost more?

Yes, if the paper or vinyl costs you more. Work out its cost per sticker the same way and the price follows.

Is free shipping a good idea for stickers?

It is a choice about how the price looks, not about cost. Enter $0 for shipping charged and your real postage cost, and the calculator raises the item price so your profit stays the same.
